How do I get started?

Your career with us begins with our excellent training, after which you will be eligible for your first placement.  Prior to your first day, you will receive all the information you need about your new client.  In addition, you will be formally introduced to the client by your care manager allowing you to settle into the role effortlessly.

During your time with Carefour, you will have the opportunity to further your knowledge with accredited courses and if you have a particular interest we can further your education with supplementary courses.  For instance, we have dedicated courses for dementia, peg feeding and specific illnesses such as Parkinsons or Multiple Sclerosis, to name a few.  Importantly, we pay for all of your courses, so there is no burden of cost to you.

Recruitment Process

Our application process is simple and we will guide you each step of the way.

Telephone Chat

If we think you could be suitable, one of our friendly recruitment team will give you a call for an initial informal chat.  You can ask any questions you may have and we will take some particulars about you.

Invite to Interview

Following a successful initial telephone chat, we will invite you to an interview.  This may be a face to face at our lovely offices or it may be an online meeting which we can set up easily for you.

Onboarding Documents

If you are successful at interview you will be asked for various documentation.  The onboarding team will help you each step of the way and will stay in touch with you as onboarding progress.

In addition, you will be booked into training, which is likely to be online with one of our experienced trainers.


Training takes place over a number of days.  You will have the opportunity to really explore the values and traits of being an excellent carer.  As well as this, you will have the latest information regarding legislation and best practice.  You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.


Once you have completed training and all your onboarding is complete, you will be offered your first placement.  We will endeavour to match you with a client who we feel you will click with and where your skills set meets their needs.

DBS checks Police checks

All offers of employment are subject to a satisfactory DBS check.  Therefore, we will need to carry out an enhanced police check (DBS) in the UK. This is a requirement for anybody working with vulnerable adults in the UK.

If you have your DBS already on the update service we can perform an update check for you.  However, we will still need to see your original certificate.  If you have lost your original certificate, you will need to apply for a new one, we can organise this for you.

We will need to see ID documents which will enable us to apply for your DBS.

Overseas checks

If you have lived outside of the UK for 6 months or more in the last 5 years you will need to apply for an overseas police clearance. You will need to organise and pay for this (the cost is normally minimal) and we will need to sight the original document when it is issued. It is normally a case of going to your local police station and requesting the check-in person, often they can complete it on the same day you apply.

Can you tell me about your training?

  • All new live-in carers attend our informative and comprehensive Induction Training – you will understand how we work, receive up-to-date information on legislation and best practice.
  • We do not charge for training
  • You can opt to join our training online, in a COVID safe environment – your own home
  • If you come by train we will pay towards your travel costs
  • If you come by car we will reimburse your parking charges and petrol
  • Tea, coffee, nibbles, snacks and fruit are provided and attendees usually bring a packed lunch
  • Training dates and what to bring will be advised after successful interview
  • If you do not live locally, we will pay for your accommodation and breakfast each day, so you just need to pay for your evening meal

What rota patterns will I work?

We are flexible and your preference is something you will discuss at your interview.  Some of our carers are flexible and enjoy picking up new clients on a flexible rota.  Others prefer shorter, set rotas, we will always try and meet your preferences.  For example, you can work any of the following rota patterns:

  • 1 week on 1 week off
  • 2 weeks on 2 weeks off
  • 2 weeks on 6 weeks off
  • 3 weeks on 1 week off or 2 weeks off
  • 4 weeks on 1 week off or 2 weeks off
  • 6 weeks on 2 weeks off
  • Longer stays with longer periods off

All we ask of you is that you commit to your chosen rota, are reliable and always arrive on time.

When will I be paid?

We always pay on the 28th of the month or before.  You will get a detailed payslip showing how your pay is made up.

  • We will pay into your nominated UK bank account 
  • You will also accrue holiday pay which you can take when you take your annual leave

Who am I employed by?

You will be employed by Carefour and we will manage your tax and National Insurance contributions.  You will have a payslip which will detail all of your payment information.

Do I need to drive?

You do not have to be a driver.  However, we do have clients that like to have a carer that drives.  If they still have their own car we ask the family to put you on their insurance policy.  

What Employment checks will you carry out?

We will guide you through each step of the recruitment and on-boarding process.  After having been accepted to the Carefour team we will take three references and pay for a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check.
